Botmetria AI Traffic Index

Issue #1 · 13 Jul – 1 Aug 2026. What AI bots and AI-assistant shoppers actually did on 3 monitored stores — measured server-side, not estimated.

Unidentified automation (curl, scrapers, custom crawlers) is counted separately: 221,244 requests — these are not AI bots. Among identified bots 95.2% are genuine and 4.8% are impostors using a bot's name from a foreign IP.

Only cohorts of five stores or more are published — a smaller group would let a specific store be identified from the median. Individual store data is never shown.

Four findings

1. AI is already here

Over one million AI-bot requests hit just three stores in three weeks. This traffic is invisible to standard analytics: bots do not run JavaScript, so GA never sees them.

2. Crawling ≠ reading

The record-holder received 606,017 requests from one AI vendor — and only 8 of them reached product pages: the crawler drowned in category filters, the catalog stayed unread, and the server paid for every hit. A machine-readable store on the same panel got 73,715 product pages read.

3. AI shoppers have started arriving

144 human visits came from AI assistants, 90% of them from ChatGPT. Standard analytics files them under “direct”, so store owners do not know these visitors exist.

4. Zero orders — the window is open

Not a single online order has been attributed to an AI assistant yet. Median AI-readiness across the 63 stores we audited is 38/100. The first stores that become readable will take the first AI orders. Rating →
